Enneagram 9

Motivation: To be stable

People typically speak of 9s as people who are motivated to avoid conflict. While that is certainly true, the true motivation of a 9 goes much deeper than that (plus, many numbers are motivated to avoid conflict for lots of different reasons!) The true motivation of a 9 is to experience a stable life. That certainly does push them to avoid conflict at all costs, but it also lulls them into a space where it can be very hard to push themselves to affect change in their own lives and the lives of those around them. 9s value a life that is simple and calm, and often surround themselves with people who they feel at ease with.

9s are highly valued for their kind demeanor and their ability to get along with anyone. 9s are phenomenal mediators, and they can find something to talk about with just about anyone. This comes from their ability to find common ground with most people and push into that space in order to find stability.

Center: Body

Body Triad number (8, 9, 1) are all motivated to find agency in their life. This means that they are searching for a way to affect their own life and want to find the freedom to live their life the way that they want to. This search for agency is often accompanied by a feeling of anger when their personal boundaries are pushed up against or overtaken.

9s are interesting in that they are both in and out of tune with their internal instincts. 9s typically have strong internal instincts about others or situations, but they may push them aside in favor of keeping the peace or finding out more information. Their connection to their inner world most often comes out as a deep-seated sense of stubbornness, which you may only recognize if you know a 9 well or are one yourself. While 9s are most often very easy-going and may have a hard time knowing what they want, they certainly have a very clear idea of what they DON’T want. Pushing a 9 into something they don’t want to do often proves to be very difficult indeed.

Stance: Withdrawn

Withdrawn numbers (4, 5, 9) are all doing repressed and have an internal reference point. For a 9, this means that they choose logic and information over diving head-first into a plan. 9s often speak of wanting to know how to do something exactly and in the right way before getting started. This causes them to get wrapped up in details that often don’t matter, and they can struggle mightily with understanding which tasks need to be prioritized over others. It’s not that 9s don’t want to affect the world, it’s that they don’t understand how to do so - and in what order to accomplish tasks in order to do the affecting. This causes 9s to feel very disconnected from their purpose, and may float along for quite awhile before jumping into something for fear of doing the wrong or ineffective thing.

Vice: Sloth

As it relates to 9s, sloth does not necessarily mean a physical sloth. Many 9s are active people who stay quite busy. However, if you examine the lives of these busy 9s, you will notice that the activity is stable and often unchanging. Sloth in this case refers to an emotional and mental sloth. 9s fall asleep to their purpose in exchange for experiencing a comfortable and stable life. They give up what they want and desire in order to feel at ease. After a while, 9s may struggle to even understand what it would be like to have a physical effect on their own life. This sloth, or search for a comfortable life at the expense of themselves, rears its ugly head almost every day in the life of a 9, and is something they must fight against again and again in order to remain in charge of themselves.
