Enneagram 9

Core Fear: Instability and disharmony

Core Desire: To be at peace; to have a conflict-free & harmonious life

Overview

Body Triad

Enneagram 9s are in the Body Triad, which means they  value effectiveness, functionality, implementation, & pragmatism. Body triad numbers (8, 9, 1) are concerned with their autonomy, or their ability to make their decisions uninfluenced by others and on their own time. 9s often struggle with feeling the need to merge with others' opinions to keep the peace.

Sloth

Sloth for 9s does not necessarily refer to a physical sloth. Many 9s are very active and live very busy lives. However, all 9s fall victim to an emotional and spiritual sloth. They fall asleep to their own wants and needs, quieting themselves to make room for others to step into their lives and guide their decisions in order to avoid any conflict or disruption of their inner sense of peace.

Withdrawn Stance

9s are in the solitary stance, which means that they have an internal reference point. This internal reference point causes them to withdraw when they feel like they haven't been able to fully parse out their thoughts, which usually means that they take several days (or months) to make important decisions. 9s also typically withdraw when they sense any conflict between themselves and/or others in a bid to remove themselves from the anger in the room.

Enneagram 9

Enneagram 9s are typically friendly and kind people. Many people feel incredibly comfortable around them, and they have a certain sense of peace that their friends & family might envy. 9s are people who value personal purpose and are incredibly loyal and dependable friends & partners.

At their best, Enneagram 9s are nonjudgemental and stable. They have learned to stop quieting themselves to make room for others, and are willing and able to show up fully for those that love them. Things go smoothly when a healthy 9 is around.

In their low moments, 9s sink further and further into themselves in a bid to block out any conflict and stop any anger from seeping out. They struggle to make decisions and may also exhibit extreme patterns of stubbornness, which stems from their search for autonomy and their wish to be able to make their own decisions uninfluenced by others. Unhealthy 9s will merge so completely with those around them that you may not even notice them in the room.

In stress, Enneagram 9s move to 6. This can cause them to finally access the anxiety that they have been so purposefully avoiding. 6 causes 9 to think "what if this doesn't work out?" for the first time and can throw them into a panicked state. On the high side of 6, though, 9s can access a sort of "kick in the butt" that they may need in order to get started with a task.

In security, 9s move to 3. 3 gives the 9 a clearer sense of purpose and the ability to stand up and speak their mind without fear of upsetting others. 3s also allows the 9s to center themselves in their own lives instead of constantly moving aside to make room for others.
